lake COMO

Dramatic scenery at the foothills of the Alps

VILLAS, BEACHES, TREASURES AND GARDENS

Even those who don’t know much about cycling have heard of the Giro di Lombardia, a cycling icon that is part of the culture of every bike fan. It is right in this area that the classic Giro di Lombardia passes through.

From the Lake’s shores, one can enjoy multiple, fascinating views: suggestive borgos, splendid villas and lush gardens await visitors in search of a little charm and relaxation, or some culture and contact with nature.

There are many places in the world that claim to be the spiritual home of cycling: the twenty-one hairpins of Alpe d'Huez, the pavé of the Arenberg Forest, and the Muur van Geraardsbergen among them. Nothing though really can claim the spiritual tag like the small chapel that sits at the top of Madonna del Ghisallo, which is considered a museum.
Partly because the collection of cycling artifacts accumulated was becoming far too big for the small chapel, a purpose-built Museo di Ciclismo has been created nearby on the mountaintop. In contrast to the traditional style of the chapel of the Madonna, the ultra-modern museum building is cut into the very side of the mountain itself – its massive plate glass windows affording breathtaking views of the Lombardia hills and the Lake.

LAKE GARDA FACTS

LOCATION

Lake Como, in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region, is an upscale resort area known for its dramatic scenery, set against the foothills of the Alps. The lake is shaped like an upside-down Y, with three slender branches that meet at the resort town of Bellagio.

CLIMATE

Como Lake is famous for its balmy temperatures and the Mediterranean sun. Despite the fact that it's very close to the mountains, its climate is mild and constant, due to its large mass of water that acts as a thermal reserve. With these conditions, winters are milder and summers are cooler than the regions of the same altitude and latitude.

CUISINE

Lake Como is known for its fabulous Michelin starred restaurants, rustic Italian eateries and sleek bars and bistros.
Cotoletta all Milanese, Osso Buco, Risotto alla Milanese, Polenta and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese are the most popular dishes.
The Brianza area is also rich in vineyards and it’s no secret that Lake Como is home to a land of fantastic wines.

TERRAIN

Like Lake Garda, Lake Como is surrounded by verdant mountains and chocolate box harbour towns perched delicately on the lakefront, Lago di Como is a cultural culmination of the Italian penisula.
Windy roads, rolling terrain with a huge selection of short and long climbs but as well flat areas on the south part of the Lake.
