Welcome to Slovenia! After a good dinner in Italy, we arrive at the hotel and check in. It’s an early night tonight, resting up and getting ready for the first day of cycling tomorrow.
Hotel: Klanjšček Wine & Stay *** – Nova Gorica
Today the real riding begins. We leave Nova Gorica behind and head into the Slovenian countryside, tackling a solid amount of climbing as the roads wind through vineyards, farmland, and small villages that see very little traffic. It’s a proper introduction to the terrain — testing early on, but with plenty of scenery to take your mind off the effort. We finish the day in Postojna, home to one of the most famous karst cave systems in the world, a great base to rest up before tomorrow.
Hotel: Hotel Jama **** – Postojna
Leaving Postojna, the route heads north through classic Slovenian landscapes — rolling hills, dense forest, and glimpses of the Alps beginning to rise on the horizon. The climbing today is steadier and more manageable, giving legs a chance to recover ahead of the bigger days to come. We roll into Škofja Loka in the afternoon, a beautifully preserved medieval town with a hilltop castle and cobbled streets — one of the prettiest overnight stops of the whole trip.
Hotel: Turizem Loka **** – Škofja Loka
The longest and toughest day of the tour. We climb steadily out of Škofja Loka into properly alpine terrain, with long ascents and rewarding descents through some of the most dramatic scenery in Slovenia. It’s a day that demands respect, but one that pays off in full: as the kilometres tick by and the legs get heavier, the reward at the end is one of the most photographed views in Europe — Lake Bled, with its island church and clifftop castle reflected in impossibly turquoise water. A well-earned dinner and a good night’s sleep await.
Hotel: Old Bled House *** – Lake Bled
Today is the highlight of the trip. We leave Lake Bled and head deep into the Julian Alps, climbing towards the legendary Vršič Pass — Slovenia’s highest mountain pass and one of the most spectacular roads in the country, with 50 hairpin turns cut into the mountainside and views that stretch across jagged alpine peaks in every direction. From the summit, a thrilling descent drops us down into the Trenta Valley and alongside the Soča River, famous for its striking emerald-green water. We follow the river valley into Bovec, surrounded by towering peaks, ending a day that will stay with you long after the trip is over.
Hotel: Hotel Mangart **** – Bovec
The final stage of the tour, and a fitting send-off. We continue to trace the Soča River as it winds south, its colour shifting through every shade of blue and green as the valley opens up around us. The climbing eases off today, giving everyone a chance to soak in the scenery and reflect on the week behind them. We finish back where we started, in Nova Gorica, with a real sense of achievement — six days, hundreds of kilometres, and some of the best roads Slovenia has to offer.
Accommodation: Klanjšček Wine & Stay *** – Nova Gorica
After breakfast, airport transfer to Venice Airport. See you next time 🙂
