ALPS & DOLOMITES FACTS

LOCATION

The Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe.
The Dolomites are in the north-east of Italy, between the Austrian border in the north and the big Venetian plain on the south. They lie in the most northern regions of Italy, Veneto, Trentino Alto-Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia.

CLIMATE

The location of the Alps, as well as the great variations in their elevations and exposure, give rise to extreme differences in climate, not only among separate ranges but also within a particular range itself.
During summer average temperatures goes from 15° and 24° C or 59° and 75° F.

CUISINE

Despite clear regional differences, this cuisine has been characterised throughout the entire Alpine region for centuries by the isolated rural life on the alpine huts and in the mountain villages.
Some of the most popular dishes are barley soups, Turtres (fried pastries filled with spinach or sauerkraut), Schlutzkrapfen (Ravioli filled with spinach) or Furtaies (a spiral-shaped, fried dessert).
A popular liqueur is grappa, which is produced from grape skins that are particularly rich in aroma and purity, giving it a truly distinct flavor.

TERRAIN

The area is famous for its long, steady climbs.
The gradients and length vary depends on the climb you select.
From the over 20km long such as the Stelvio or Gavia to the steepest part of Zoncolan at 15%.
But don't worry, most of the other famous climbs are between 10 to 12 km with gradient around 5/6%.
